Introducing Fotofus
As you can tell in visiting, Fotofus is not a very big website and doesn´t run a huge webshop. It is a one-man-business and we´d like to tell you a little more of where we came from and how it all started.
Once upon a time
I was born and raised in the Netherlands. My interest started as a hobby, like most photographers. I started very young. When I was about seven or eight years old, I got my first Agfa camera as a prize because I had a nice costume for carnival. That camera went everywhere with me and took only square photos, but already in colour. The cost of printing a roll of 12, 24 or 36 photos was very high and I had to pay for it out of my pocket money. And waiting for the prints to be finished could take up to two weeks. So this tension was always exciting.
Growing up
In the following years, as a young traveller inside Holland, I leanred to use my parents’ camera, an analogue camera from East Germany. I can’t remember the brand, but I do remember that it was bright blue. Soon I was the one in our family who used the camera the most, and I also knew my way around all the settings.
Travelling far and beyond
Interest waned a little during my university years, but when I got a job with an income and the opportunity to travel, the photos started to pile up again. I used a variety of cameras to take photos at first and then switched to slides. This way I was able to share my travels with a group of friends or family on a big screen. All those 1000´s of slides have now been digitised.
Understanding photography
What struck my early audiences and what I hoped and worked towards to, was a certain ‘look’ in my photos´ beautiful compositions. And not just at well-known tourist sites, but also of compositions, large or small, of things and places in every day life that many people would not even notice. I want them to come suddenly to life in a special way in my pictures.
My signature in photos
So I might show you a photograph with only part of a scenery – even very close up – instead of conveniently delivering the total picture. No, I want your visual imagination to be triggered to fill in the gaps.
The appreciation of this signature soon became a good incentive to go further, not just taking pictures ´of everything´ but to delve into the technical aspects of camera, lighting and composition, to give a more solid, factual background to the creative side of what my eyes see.
Keep learning and improving my photos
In recent years I have learned more from courses, trips, software editing, excellent teachers, fellow hobbyists and colleagues than in my entire photographic life, but still with the same enthusiasm.
Taking new photos of a new life
Meanwhile, after the switch to digital cameras and many tens of thousands of photos later, my personal life has had a lot of changes. Partly due to the pandemic, we have decided to build a new life in our beloved Spain in the beautiful region of Murcía. This is a life that brings new opportunities and other qualities. This meant an end to my original career (being safely employed in an office job), but also brought new opportunities to dedicate time and space to my beloved photography even more than before.
Showcase for the world to see
Photography takes a lot of time, and to do it well, it takes even more time. This makes it more and more worthwhile to show the best results to the outside world. And to be able to discover who I can reach with my “eye” for beauty, composition and colour.
Through fotofus.com I show you my best work and the work I am most proud of. I will start small and expand my work on Fotofus.com in the weeks and months to come. There is so much beauty to show from places all around!
